Stanford Seminar – How can you believe in machine learning? Carlos Guestrin

Carlos Guestrin, Stanford College
May 11, 2022

Machine learning (ML) and AI programs are getting integral parts of each and every factor of our life. The definition, growth and deployment of these programs are pushed by (intricate) human choices. And, as these AIs are generating far more and additional conclusions for us, and the underlying ML devices are getting a lot more and more elaborate, it is all-natural to inquire the issue: “How can you rely on machine learning?”

In this converse, I’ll current a framework, anchored on three pillars: Clarity, Competence and Alignment. For every, I’ll describe algorithmic and human processes that can aid push toward far more efficient, impactful and reliable AIs. For Clarity, I’ll include approaches for building the predictions of machine learning far more explainable. For Competence, I will concentration on approaches to assessing and testing ML types with the rigor that we implement to sophisticated program items. Finally, for Alignment, I’ll describe the complexities of aligning the behaviors of an AI with the values we want to replicate in the globe, along with techniques that can produce extra aligned outcomes.Through this dialogue, we will include the two elementary ideas and actionable algorithms and tools that can guide to increased have faith in in ML.
