Novel LPBF device notion for Additive Manufacturing of substantial parts

Traditional programs for Laser Powder Mattress Fusion (LPBF) are restricted in size. When increasing the usable create-volume, the challenge is to know a homogeneous shielding gasoline flow above the whole powder bed. In addition, an increase in productivity is important in order to be capable to use such units economically.

To meet these worries, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technological innovation ILT has developed a novel LPBF device notion (size: 1000 x 800 x 350 mm³) for the manufacturing of significant elements as part of the Fraunhofer lighthouse job futureAM. This notion incorporates a processing head which is movable via linear axes. The processing head attributes a neighborhood inert gas method, so creating process situations which are easy to control. The most current development phase involves a processing head with a 5-scanner technique to assure sufficient efficiency of the approach.

For the evidence of notion, Rolls Royce Ltd. delivered an oil transfer coupling of an aircraft engine as a demonstrator and redesigned it for additive manufacturing. With the help of the new machine concept, it was doable to manufacture the demonstrator with a bounding box of Ø620 x H280 mm³. The monolithically created ingredient as a result replaces an assembly of originally 44 specific areas and will be introduced to the community for the initial time at formnext 2020.
